4Tel’s 4Trip™ is a comprehensive train planning software solution for managing the development and release of service timetables, including the planning of work on track activities. 4Trip™ enables planning staff to create and manage train paths weeks in advance of the day of operation, with the ability to  amend the train plan and re-release as needed.  4Trip™ advanced planning functionality allows better  management of trains and track work.

4Trip™ enables train planning staff  to use a baseline Standard Working Timetable as the basis for creating and releasing the Daily Working Timetable.   4Trip™ enable several levels of precedence to be applied including daily working timetables, and special event working timetables,  enabling customisation of the timetable for public holidays or specific maintenance requirements.  4Trip™ can schedule as far as business requirements require, with review and alteration capacity.

4Trip™ is designed for integration with live operations, which is then captured in the reporting and billing systems. This alignment of the train plan with actual train running data provides a picture of how train operations are performing against the train plan on the day of operations.

4ASW Capability

4Tel can provide a proven, virtual-block, communications-based train control solution for optimised regional and remote rail network operations. The solution called 4ASW, is a world-class digital railway operating environment, using proven-in-service systems, the latest in data systems, as well as software and broadband communications. It maximises the safety, reliability and efficiency of both below and above-rail operations between the pit and port, for improving network capacity and efficiency. Further, being a modern, fully digital railway control system, it can readily evolve to fully automated operations in the future with the addition of extra locomotive on-board processing.

Positive Train Control History

4ASW is a Positive Train Control system that is not tied into any wayside signalling systems infrastructure by vital communications. Indeed, it does not even need vital field infrastructure. In lieu, 4ASW uses GPS location-based precision to manage rail operations at the network-wide level by implementing a centralised interlocking as a vital process. This style of system is called a virtual-block, Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) system. As a CBTC based system, 4ASW provides precision train control, maintenance staff permits-to-work, and locomotive performance reporting at the network level. 4ASW delivers significant benefits to rail operations from its continuous, accurate and real-time information flow which allows dynamic train running prioritisation, improved running time reliability, improved track capacity and improved asset utilisation.

Safety Accreditation

4ASW comes with a history of previous safety accreditation to the Office of the National Rail Safety Regulator (ONRSR) for "Safety Integrity Level – 2" (SIL-2) operations network-wide in Australia.

4ABSThe safe and effective delivery of network management from a control centre requires key functions such as train reporting, event reporting and usage billing to be managed effectively. 4ABS has been designed to meet these needs.

4ABS uses a MySQL or SQL database and webpages to display any access and billing history data that will allow better management of rail network access over an Intranet or the Internet.

The primary functions of 4ABS are:

  • Recording and managing train running information for billing purposes
  • Recording of events that impact on or are relevant to train operations billing
  • Provision of essential information for shift handover
  • Recording of train delay information against train plans
  • To maintain train-consist details and train manifest information for train billing and reporting

4Asset4ASSETS is used to manage the static information about devices and their maintenance history to allow for better asset control. The software then interfaces to other 4Tel systems such as 4Site to monitor a device's specific operating status if a fixed asset device, or 4Trak to monitor a device's location and movements if a mobile device.

The software uses a MySQL or SQL database and webpage front end to allow staff access to any inventory data over an Intranet or Internet service. The software can be configured to alert users when licence renewals or programmed services are due.

TMACSThe Train Management and Control System (TMACS) is a computer-based Train Order Working (TOW) system for the control of rural and regional railway lines. Train Order Working is a method of Safe Working ideally suited for controlling train movements, particularly on lines that comprise single track lines with passing loops. TMACS utilises a centralised radio-based interlocking for the control of trains using both voice and electronic movement authorities. Versions of the software are currently used in Australia (regional NSW on the Australian Rail Track (ARTC) single-track main and NSW rural lines).

Business Benefit

TMACS is proven in both operational service and safety performance. The product uses screen-based forms and GPS tracking of train movements against issued authorities, to produce a total safety solution for radio-based train order working.
This system works over both private and public communications networks (e.g. mobile phone) offering flexibility for deployment. The additional benefit is that track-side infrastructure is limited to inexpensive static signs, there-by maximising rail infrastructure reliability and minimising the through-life operational costs of the railway.

Safety Accreditation

TMACS is the ONLY radio-based train movement authority system in Australia that is formally accredited to international standard IEC 61508 for Safety Integrity Level 2 (SIL-2) by using a GPS Watchdog Server to monitor actual train movements against authorised train movements. This is important because as more processes in rail are computerised and interfaces automated, the behaviour of a safety-related system needs to be independently verified. TMACS has this formal verification.

TMACS is currently used as a Level 1 voice-based system and Level 2 electronic authorities as its underlying databases and GPS checking support the issue of full Electronic Authorities for data transmission to locomotives and vehicles.  Mixed fleet working (voice and electronic authorities) is also supported as a core capability.

TMACS Features:

The development path for the TMACS suite, so that it can be used simultaneously on any line for any mix of locomotive technology is:

  1. TMACS Level 1 – for mixed-fleet, voice-based, conventional train order working
  2. TMACS Level 2 – for mixed voice and electronic movement authorities to trains
  3. TMACS Level 3 – for  mixed voice and electronic movements authorities to trains with on-board enforcement (available December 2016)

4Tel has a suite of train control and communications products that can be customised to create a specific management system for a rail Network Management Centre. The product suite is capable of monitoring and controlling rail infrastructure in both local and remote locations, using few staff and at low costs.

The suite includes a rail vehicle detection system (4TRAFFIK), a radio-based train order electronic authority system (4ETA), an assets management system (4ASSETS™), and a complete train access, reporting and billing system (4ABS). All software technologies have interoperable interfaces with industry specific devices to maximise data re-use between systems and lower deployment costs.

4Tel can provide a total end-to-end solution for the fit-out of a large, modern, train network management centre.  4Tel designed and built a new Network Management Centre (NMC) for John Holland Rail in Newcastle for controlling the NSW Country Rail Network. The system was successfully commissioned into operational service on 16 January 2012. 

The NMC comprises three types of workstations:

  • Rail Vehicle Detection (RVD) Centralised Train Control (CTC)
  • Train Order Working (TOW), and
  • Specialist network maintenance terminals

4Tel designed the complete installation, including power, emergency generators, cabling, lighting, work stations, servers, screens, voice communications, recording, train radio interfaces and software configuration, and commissioned into service in less than 12 months.
