Leadership Team 2024 Highlights

The holidays are almost here and it has been an eventful year for 4Tel and 4AI Systems. Our various teams have enjoyed many shared successes – strengthening existing client contracts, developing new products, and showcasing our brands on a global stage. We asked our leadership team to wrap up their highlights of 2024.

Tony Crosby

CEO, 4Tel

In 2024, the 4Tel team focused on servicing our existing clients via maintenance support and capability enhancements, and developing new capabilities. As we continue to grow, our company culture remains strong, as does our commitment to support diversity, inclusivity and flexibility within the workplace. Due to consistent growth over the past nine years, and to support continued growth, we are well advanced in our planning for a new office in Newcastle, with construction commencing in 2025.

With 4Tel products in operation in Africa since 2017, I made two trips this year to Africa to respond to the continued interest in our solutions. This is primarily due to the similarities in our operating environments, and our ability to deliver innovative solutions that do not rely on trackside infrastructure. We hope to expand Africa operations in 2025.

In 2025, 4Tel will mark 25 years in operation, as well as numerous staff reaching 10, 15 and 20 years of service. We look forward to coming together to celebrate these impressive milestones.

A warm congratulations to our Group CEO, Joanne Wust, on the recent arrival of her healthy baby boy, Tom. We welcome Joanne returning from parental leave in 2025.

Mark Wood

Acting CEO, 4AI Systems

Introduced as subsidiary company of 4Tel in just 2021, 4AI Systems ends 2024 with a 17-strong team of industry-leading talent. Our progress saw our technology in action as we undertook an AI trial with Pacific National, with HORUS SensorBars installed on trains operating on the Queensland North Coast rail line. In addition to this trial, we continue to support the operation of HORUS in the Pilbara of Western Australia.

Showcasing HORUS, our onboard vision perception and warning system, in the new AI Mobility Lab at InnoTrans in Berlin was a standout. The response from our international colleagues who were eager to learn more about our capabilities exceeded our expectations.

After the success of our Proof of Technology in 2021/2022 and establishing an office in the USA in 2023, we are currently engaged in numerous business discussions, and we expect to make a sizable impact across the North American rail industry in 2025.

Graham Hjort

General Manager, Control Systems

It might look routine, but delivering another year of stable, reliable, and efficient train control technology for our customers is a significant achievement. eTAP (ARTC) and ETW (CRN) continue to dominate work on track activities in their respective networks, supported by thousands of users.

TMACS continues to operate as the safest system of its kind in the industry and currently controls ~5,000km of track. A feasibility study to increase this by an additional 1800km on the T2K line was completed in 2024, and implementation is now underway. This project will see the first expansion of TMACS into SA and WA, with the system installed in ARTC’s Adelaide control centre.

Next year marks 10 years of Electronic Authorities (EAs) on the Country Regional Network (CRN) of New South Wales, with expansion into ARTC’s network also planned for 2025. EAs continue to delivery industry-leading safety and efficiency for regional train control.

The diligent effort from our team has also seen significant progress achieved in developing two exciting new network management products to complement 4Tel’s existing applications, and we look forward to sharing more on these systems as they are finalised.

James Woltjer

General Manager, Software

Software is proudly the biggest department within 4Tel group and this year our team members excelled in driving staff-led projects and further developing their skills. We have been working hard all year on upcoming releases of our software, to introduce new features and increase usability and reliability for all projects across the business.

Our long-term relationship with Transdev Sydney Ferries has strengthened, with our contract renewed and the scope-of-work expanded, with devices on new ferries as part of system integration.

We have also increased our work with Port Botany through the continued development of our 4Port software, which enables operators to monitor truck movements and container lifts for stevedoring operations.
