4Tel Celebrates Milestone in Gender Equality

Celebrating a milestone for equality, our recent leadership meeting had an equal representation of genders for the first time. Our wider team now comprises 25% female employees, well above the 15% of Australian women working in STEM roles and in line with the rail industry average.

Our leadership team actively works towards gender equality. How?

  1. Hiring structures
We’ve identified ways to better support working parents, such as introducing flexible working arrangements. When hiring, we know women may have less years of experience, so we include a relevant skills-based task to test ability as part of our interview process.

  1. Salary benchmarking tool
In 2023, we analysed skills and salaries for any unconscious bias that may be impacting gender and cultural equality. The outcome was exceedingly positive, with no salary gaps identified across departments and new benchmarking tools implemented and reviewed annually.

  1. Career development
We encourage the next generation of females to enter engineering careers by sponsoring Newcastle University’s Women in Engineering (NUWiE) club. This is a mutual success story, with two members securing permanent roles with 4Tel after connecting with us at NUWiE networking events.

  1. Ethical development of AI
4AI Systems leaders deeply consider the potential impacts, particularly from a safety perspective, of not having broad representation in the development of AI programs.

We are committed to further driving female representation in the industry by continuously seeking areas for improvement and introducing valuable initiatives for our team.
