25 Years of 4Tel
In March, we celebrated an extraordinary 25 years of 4Tel in business. To mark the occasion, we came together with past and present employees and their families, clients and the Lord Mayor of our hometown, Newcastle.
At the celebration, our Founder Derel Wust reflected on our beginnings as a small consultancy to becoming a global solutions provider. We remain an Australian family-owned business proudly operating across three continents – Australia, USA and Africa.
Project Milestones
10 Years of 4PIDS
We reached the notable milestone of 10 years of our Passenger Information Display System (4PIDS) in service. In 2015, VicTrack engaged our team to configure 4PIDS for 33 V/Line stations across Victoria’s regional rail network. We now operate 394 PIDS across the state, which will continue to increase early next year.
10 Years of Electronic Authorities
A major milestone in 2025 was 10 years of Train Management and Control System (TMACS) Electronic Authorities. We first delivered digital movement authorities for train operations in regional New South Wales, now the dominant digital train control method used across thousands of kilometres of track. This milestone contributed to 4Tel being named a finalist in the 2025 RISSB Rail Safety Awards.
TMACS Expansion with ARTC
In June, we announced that 4Tel has been awarded a contract by the Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC) to extend the use of TMACS across 1,276 kilometres of track between Tarcoola in South Australia and Kalgoorlie in Western Australia. We’re pleased to have made significant headway on this project.
4AI Systems
We continue to increase the profile of 4AI Systems by showcasing our AI technology globally. Our trial with Pacific National in Queensland caught the attention of the industry worldwide at leading conferences, including Heavy Haul and AusRail in Australia and Next-Gen and International Heavy Haul in the USA.
Our work is also being recognised outside of the rail industry. This year 4AI Systems was named a finalist in both the Australian AI Awards and the InnovationAUS Awards. Congratulations to our team for their dedication and hard work in taking this innovative technology to market.
Business Growth
The combined success of 4Tel and 4AI Systems has prompted the development of the rear warehouse at our head office. Due to be completed in early 2026, the new building will allow for additional workspaces, meeting rooms, a workshop and staff amenities.
Always striving to improve our business practices, we are pleased to have received 4Tel’s ISO 27001 Certification, meeting the international standard for Information Security Management Systems. We celebrated a milestone for equality, with our leadership meetings having an equal representation of genders for the first time.
Community Engagement
We were thrilled to be recognised on University of Newcastle’s Supporter Honour Board for our ongoing philanthropic activities. A highlight of this relationship was seeing the NUbots place third at RoboCup International in Brazil.
We enjoy meeting talented students through our sponsorship of events such as Women in Engineering Cocktail Connections, Newcastle Tech Futures day and the RoboCup Junior competition.
